Prepare for each one of your speed training
session with a thorough warm up.
Eliminate long distance running! It reduces
explosiveness and compromises speed. If
conditioning is an immediate concern, condition
specifically for your sport. There are many ways to
get in shape for explosive sports with out doing
slow and aerobic work which diminishes
explosiveness.
For the young athletes, speed training work should
be playful and game like. Formal drill work is not
required before the ages of 9-10. Everything
should be quick and short bursts with rapid
changes of direction. Try Playing Tag games and
short relays.
Maximal strength , acceleration ability are closely
related. Spend a good amount of time working on
maximal strength through means like squatting
Always stress correct mechanics. Relate the
mechanics to the specific movements of your
sport. Emphasize correct mechanics without
making the athlete robotic. All for individual
expression of each athlete.
